Lenovo’s lineup of products for the holidays is ready and set to deliver smarter technology for both businesses and regular everyday consumers. These were officially launched during the company’s TechWorld 2021 event held on Wednesday, September 8, where Lenovo also announced a trio of digital transformation solutions—Project Unity, TruScale and Lenovo Brain—that enterprises can use.
Among Lenovo’s most notable new offerings is the ThinkEdge SE70, Lenovo’s powerful and flexible Edge AI platform specifically designed for enterprise IT using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The SE70 is engineered specifically to meet the ever-growing intelligent transformation needs of various industries, from logistics to transportation to retail, healthcare and manufacturing.
“AI applications at the edge have enormous potential for the intelligent transformation of business, like using computer vision to track warehousing and logistics operations or automating manufacturing processes,” said Jon Pershke, Vice President of Strategy and Emerging Business at Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group. “The ThinkEdge portfolio is expanding to include the power, performance and flexibility customers need to build next-level edge networks.”
This pioneering edge solution is powered by the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX platform and created in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), leveraging in particular the AWS Panorama. The SE70 is, thus, ideal for organisations looking to better themselves through innovation, as in retail companies aiming to improve the customer experience and manufacturers seeking to enhance quality assurance and personnel safety.
“We are excited to be working with Lenovo and NVIDIA, two market leaders in edge technology,” said Ankur Mehrotra, Director at AWS AI. “This new product brings together strong GPU performance from NVIDIA, hardware system expertise from Lenovo, and scalable computer vision from AWS into a cost-effective and competitive package that customers can use to solve business challenges across many use cases.”
The SE70, in particular, can help companies shift workloads and other technologies farther out into the edge, where data is actually utilised and consumed. The world’s smallest AI supercomputer, the SE70 guarantees high-speed storage and connectivity for workload consolidation at the edge with its 6-core NVIDIA Carmel ARM CPU, 384-core NVIDIA Volta GPU with 48 Tensor Cores and 2GbE fast network speed.
The SE70 is also highly reliable with its wide operating temperature range and IP rating that ensures 24/7 operations even under severe conditions. It even has upgradable SOM and IO choices for enhanced customisation. Critically, the SE70 works in partnership with the Amazon Panorama Team, supporting the Panorama SDK to enable simplified deployment and automatically connect the SE70 to IP cameras. With AWS support, the SE70 can also deploy AI models down to the cameras with telemetry.
Lenovo will also be launching Project Unity, a no-cost software solution that will enable Lenovo device users to connect their devices via Quick Pin Sharing for easy, wireless and seamless file sharing and an extended experience across the two or more devices.
“The average home has over 10 connected devices, and that will double by 2025,” said Johnson Jia, Senior Vice President of the Consumer Segment and Advanced Innovation Centre at Lenovo. “That’s why we’re launching Project Unity, a platform based on Lenovo’s UDS Ecosystem. It will link all your smart devices together. You can extend your Windows display using your Android tablet or create a mirror environment to get more done anywhere you want.”
Project Unity is, therefore, perfect for people looking to improve productivity, whether in the office or remotely, as it enables smart task collaboration that lets users leverage the touch, pen and OSK input functionalities of a Lenovo tablet with the mirrored Windows environment of their PC or laptop. At the same time, users can still use their Android tablet natively and without interruption—something no other solution available in the market can offer. Lenovo’s pioneering software will initially work on all Android 11 tablets but is likely to be ported for Android 10 and below in the future.
“It [Project Unity] unites all your data across devices in your own personal cloud without needing cloud storage,” Jia added. “Project Unity and all smart PCs and tablets will liberate and empower more people to work and entertain in hybrid through smooth and seamless experiences.”
TruScale is Lenovo’s new portfolio-spanning Everything-as-a-Service offering created specifically with enterprise customers’ hybrid reality needs.
“Customers need a simple and easy way to consume IT,” said Yuanqing Yang, Chairman and CEO at Lenovo. “That’s why we are announcing Lenovo TruScale. More enterprise and SMB customers are adopting Device-as-a-Service and Infrastructure-as-a-Service. They are choosing the IT infrastructure and the services that are easy to scale up and scale-out, and to upload and download. They [customers] are choosing Platform-as-a-Service and Software-as-a-Service that match their needs.”
These varying needs are why many organisations are looking for a flexible consumption model, and that is exactly what TruScale provides. Launched just two-and-a-half years ago, TruScale integrates separate purchases of hardware, software and services into one seamless experience only and also turns deployment and operation services into a subscription-based all-inclusive model.
Lenovo also announced the launch of Lenovo Brain, the company’s AI platform engineered to address customer pain points in a range of industries, including manufacturing and healthcare. Lenovo Brain is an industry-information-oriented AI technology platform that will continue to accelerate the intelligent transformation of industries.
“Lenovo Brain first started as an AI platform to empower Lenovo’s own intelligent transformation— from enabling our devices’ natural interaction with users to enabling our infrastructure AIOps to empowering our smart factories,” said Yong Rui, senior vice president and CTO at Lenovo. “But we haven’t stopped there. We are further developing it [Lenovo Brain] to help others in the industry, too.”
Lenovo Brain, according to Yong, “provides a full lifecycle AI solution construction, deployment and support across cloud, edge and client.”
